Feeling Helpless Right Now? Why Regulating Your Nervous System Is the First Act of Change

Feeling helpless, overwhelmed, and uncertain of what to do.
Feeling helpless, overwhelmed, and uncertain of what to do.

Lately, a lot of us are feeling it—the heaviness, the outrage, the helplessness, the sense that so much feels out of our control.

When COVID first hit, I remember thinking very clearly: I have the tools.I had yoga. I had meditation. I had breathwork. I had nutrition. I had acupressure and Chinese herbal medicine. I had spent years learning how to regulate my nervous system, support my body, and stay grounded in uncertainty. I didn’t know what was coming—but I knew I was prepared.

Meditation for emotional balancing

Right now, the world feels unsettled again. And while it feels like things are out of our control, that isn’t entirely true. The problem isn’t that we can’t take action—it’s that action is hard when we’re flooded with emotion. So this is the moment to lean into your tools, whatever they are for you. Meditation. Journaling. Therapy. Breathwork. Acupuncture. Herbs. Pilates. Walking. Prayer. Use the tools that help you stay balanced and clear, because clarity is where real change begins.

Start with what you can control. You can control your breath. And when you control your breath, you calm your nervous system, steady your mind, and create space for emotional balance. You can control your body. Move it. Change the Qi. Take a walk. Do a downward dog. Shake it out. Jump. Stretch. Anything that shifts what’s stuck.

Then, control your environment. Make your bed. Do the dishes. Fold the laundry. Small acts of order restore a sense of agency. From there, you can step outside your sanctuary and help someone else—check on a neighbor, bring groceries to an elder, support someone in your community.

And when that sense of stability returns, you can go bigger. Serve. Volunteer. Join a board. Run for something local. Call your representatives. Write the letter. Send that email. Change happens when regulated people take consistent action.

If enough of us make these small, grounded choices, they snowball. That’s how real change happens—not from panic, but from presence.

So start inward.

Use your tools.

Regulate your body.

Clear your mind.

Because when you’re grounded inside, you can move outward with strength, discernment, and purpose. When you care for your body and regulate your nervous system, clarity follows—and from clarity, meaningful action becomes possible.
