If you're getting a mercury filling removed (like I am!), it’s smart to prep your body ahead of time and support it afterward. Mercury is a heavy metal — meaning it can wreak havoc on your system if it's not cleared properly. But don’t worry: with a little preparation, natural detox tools, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) wisdom, you can glide through this process and feel amazing afterward.

Let's dive in.

1. The Night Before Your Appointment

Hydrate Deeply Water supports your kidneys and lymphatic system — both major detox pathways. Add a squeeze of lemon for a bonus vitamin C boost.

Boost Antioxidants Mercury causes oxidative stress. Load up on Vitamin C (500–1000mg) and eat antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, spinach, broccoli, and cilantro.

Load Up on Fiber Fiber binds to toxins in your gut. Dinner should include chia seeds, flaxseeds, lentils, oats, or leafy greens.

Optional: Chlorella or Activated Charcoal Chlorella is a natural "sponge" for heavy metals. Activated charcoal can also trap toxins but must be taken away from medications and supplements.

2. The Morning of Your Appointment

  • Take Vitamin C again.

  • Optional: Take chlorella or activated charcoal 30 minutes before.

  • Bring water to sip afterward.

3. Immediately After Mercury Removal

Rinse and Rest Use a baking soda and water rinse to neutralize any acids or debris. Drink clean, filtered water and take it easy for the rest of the day.

Light Meals Only Give your digestion a break. Think smoothies, broths, and simple, fiber-rich foods.

4. The Next 3-7 Days: Gentle Detox and Healing

Support Your Liver, Kidneys, and Gut

  • Drink tons of filtered water.

  • Continue Vitamin C daily.

  • Add selenium-rich foods like Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, sardines, spinach, and eggs.

Eat Mercury-Clearing Foods

  • Cilantro: pulls heavy metals from tissues.

  • Parsley: supports kidney detox.

  • Chlorella: traps metals in the gut.

  • Garlic: boosts your body's glutathione.

  • Spirulina: binds metals and protects the brain.

  • Turmeric: protects the liver and reduces inflammation.

  • Green tea: antioxidant powerhouse.

MOVE your Body Gentle movement stimulates your lymphatic system — your internal "trash pickup" service.

Epsom Salt Baths Magnesium pulls toxins through the skin while calming your nervous system.

Prioritize Sleep Your brain detoxes while you sleep. Aim for 7-9 solid hours.

5. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Support

Acupuncture Acupuncture can dramatically support detoxification by:

  • Moving stuck Liver Qi (detox pathways)

  • Strengthening the Kidneys

  • Promoting elimination (bowel movements!)

  • Calming the nervous system after dental trauma

Top 5 TCM Herbs for Heavy Metal Detox:

  1. Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) — Known for drawing out heavy metals.

  2. Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua) — Cools inflammation and supports liver detox.

  3. Dandelion Root (Pu Gong Ying) — Clears heat and toxins from the body.

  4. Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) — Protects and rejuvenates the liver.

  5. Milk Thistle (from Western Herbalism, also used in TCM) — Supports liver cell regeneration.

Chi Nei Tsang (CNT) Abdominal Massage CNT focuses on clearing blockages in the abdomen where toxins can "hide." It's one of the best tools for moving lymphatic and digestive stagnation after mercury exposure. (At my clinic, Chi Nei Tsang is one of the most requested healing modalities for deep detox!)

6. The Most Important Rule: You Must Eliminate!

If you don't poop, you don't detox! Toxins processed by your liver and kidneys get dumped into your gut — if you’re not having healthy daily bowel movements, you’re simply reabsorbing those toxins back into your bloodstream.

Daily elimination is critical. Stay hydrated, eat fiber, and move!
