Acupuncture isn’t just an alternative therapy—it’s a globally recognized, research-backed approach to wellness that helps treat pain, stress, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues, and much more.

Whether you're curious about how acupuncture works, wondering if it can help your condition, or looking for a holistic option that doesn’t involve more medications—this guide is for you.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture for back pain.
Acupuncture for back pain.

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy that uses thin, sterile needles inserted into specific points on the body to stimulate healing, regulate the nervous system, and restore balance.

In Western terms, acupuncture affects:

  • The central nervous system

  • Neurotransmitters and hormones (like endorphins, serotonin, cortisol)

  • Circulation, inflammation, and tissue repair

In TCM, acupuncture moves Qi (vital energy) and supports the organ systems to restore harmony and treat both the root cause and the symptom.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

From a biomedical view:

  • Stimulates nerves and increases blood flow

  • Activates the parasympathetic “rest and digest” system

  • Reduces inflammation and improves healing time

From a TCM view:

  • Balances Yin & Yang

  • Strengthens weakened organ systems (e.g., Spleen for digestion, Liver for stress)

  • Clears blockages that cause pain or dysfunction

Who Performs Acupuncture?

Licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac.) in California must complete 3,000+ hours of training, pass rigorous national board exams, and maintain continuing education.

Unlike “dry needling” (which may only require 20–40 hours of training), Licensed Acupuncturists:

  • Are trained in full-body systems

  • Know safe needle depth and point location

  • Treat the whole person, not just the muscle

What Should I Expect in My First Acupuncture Visit?

At my San Diego clinic:

  1. Comprehensive intake on your health, lifestyle, and symptoms

  2. Gentle, precise acupuncture using sterile, single-use needles

  3. Option to include cupping, abdominal massage, herbal or nutrition advice

  4. A custom care plan that supports your long-term healing goals

Most people feel relaxed, balanced, and sleep better after their first session.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

This depends on your condition. Acute issues may resolve in 1–3 sessions. Chronic conditions (e.g., IBS, fatigue, hormone imbalance) may require 6–10+ visits for full resolution.

We offer discounted packages and a free discovery call to determine the best plan for you.
